How to get rid of a couch

Getting rid of a couch involves more than choosing where it goes. Selling, donating and local collection each have acceptance, coordination or preparation steps. Here is the work to plan for, followed by how JunkGurus handles the lifting and hauling.

Check availability for your address and confirm item eligibility, access and pickup scope before booking.

What is the easiest way to get rid of a couch?

Use JunkGurus when you want the couch carried out and hauled away. Show every section and describe stairs, sleeper mechanisms and tight access points so the pickup covers the work you need. Our crew handles the agreed lifting and hauling; you do not need to borrow a truck or arrange a disposal trip.

Sell it or give it away

Share clear photos, dimensions and an honest description of the couch’s condition. Say whether it is a sleeper or part of a sectional, and agree on who will move it. Keep your removal plan open until the handoff is confirmed.

Ask a donation center

Contact the specific location before moving the couch. Habitat ReStores accept qualifying furniture, but local acceptance rules and pickup options vary. Check Habitat ReStore donation options and describe any wear or damage. A donation request does not mean the couch has been accepted.

Check city bulky-item collection

Your address, property type, couch size and collection schedule matter. Confirm eligibility, any appointment requirement and curb-placement instructions with your waste provider. At an apartment community, ask the property manager where approved bulky-item pickups take place. If the service requires curbside placement, arrange how the couch will get to the approved spot safely.

Find local disposal options in your area. Confirm current collection rules with your city or county.

What to show before couch pickup

Photograph the whole couch, including every section of a sectional. Include a separate ottoman or other furniture if you want it removed too. Note whether the couch has a pull-out bed, powered sections or loose and damaged parts.

Check the route from the couch to the exit. Note stairs, floor level, elevator access and narrow doorways or turns. If the couch will not fit through an opening, raise that before booking; do not assume couch disassembly is included. Extensive disassembly, demolition and tear-out are outside the pickup guidelines.

Use our furniture removal photo and access checklist for the detailed steps. You do not need to move a heavy couch by yourself just to take a photo.

How couch removal pricing works

JunkGurus pricing is based primarily on the space your items take up. Conditions such as the item’s location and floor level also affect the estimate. A sectional or several pieces of furniture should all appear in the request.

Upload photos to review the pricing shown for your request and available pickup times in the app. Confirm the pickup scope and pricing before booking.

A few questions before you book

What if the couch has bed bugs?

Items with bed bugs, fleas or lice require advance management approval and a special estimate. Disclose the issue and contact JunkGurus before booking; do not book through the app before approval. Severe infestation, unsafe decomposition or leaking contamination needs safety review. Wrapping an item does not make it eligible on its own. See our current pickup guidelines.

Will my couch be donated?

Donation depends on the couch’s condition and a recipient’s acceptance. JunkGurus prioritizes donation when appropriate and recycling when available, but a particular outcome is not guaranteed.

Can I leave it at the curb?

Follow the instructions for the pickup you choose. For city collection, use the city’s schedule and placement rules. For a JunkGurus request, show the actual pickup location and access details in the app.
